Replacement DTV Converter Coupons Now Available
The federal TV Converter Box Coupon Program has begun to accept replacement requests from those whose coupons expired without being redeemed.
In January, the coupon program ran out of funding, and incoming coupon requests were placed on a waiting list. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has now provided the National Telecommunications and Information Administration $650 million to issue at least 12.25 million more coupons.
"Each household can apply for two $40 coupons, which cover most of the cost of converter boxes. If a coupon has expired, the NTIA will send a replacement coupon," the association said. The coupons expire within 90 days of issuance.
Although 26 million coupons have been redeemed through the program, federal officials report 17 million have gone unused and expired after three months.
